Fat Grafting Process
Fat grafting is performed in a three-step process: harvesting, purification, and injection. Each step is performed carefully and is designed to sculpt your body to maintain a natural aesthetic.
Harvesting
A special liposuction process is used to harvest unwanted excess fat from an area of your body. Fat grafting patients require a good source of fat, which can usually be found in the abdomen, hips, thighs, and back in most patients. Liposuction uses gentle suction to remove the fat from these trouble areas. Great care is taken to contour the body, leaving a smoother and leaner area.
Purification
The harvested fat then goes through a purification process designed to separate blood and oils from the fatty tissue. During this process, weak fat cells will break down, leaving only the strongest fat cells for the grafting process. The quality of the fat harvested and other factors will determine the volume of fat retained following your procedure.
Injection
The final step is the injection of the fat into your breast(s). A needle is used to graft the fat into the breast(s) in fine, even layers. This subtle technique is designed to increase breast volume while maintaining a natural appearance. Dr. Strawn places fat in specific locations to treat surface irregularities or edging problems and improve the overall shape of the breasts.
Recovery
You will experience bruising and swelling around the breasts and at your liposuction site. A compression garment should be worn around the liposuctioned area to reduce swelling and improve results. A special support bra will also be worn to facilitate healing the breasts. Most patients will be able to return to work within two weeks of their surgery. You should be able to resume your regular physical activities after four weeks with your surgeon’s permission. Most swelling should subside within six weeks, but minor swelling may persist for several months.
Results
Scarring is minimal following fat grafting. Incisions for harvesting are less than a centimeter, and grafting incisions are usually around two millimeters. You will have small scars at the site of your liposuction, but great care is taken to place these small incisions in discreet locations. Since the fat is injected into the breast(s) via a thin cannula, the scars are very small and placed around the areola or the base of the breast, making them rarely visible. Patients will swell directly after the procedure, giving the appearance of double the grafted fat volume. The swelling will subside, and patients may lose some initial fat cells in the first several months following the procedure. However, the fat that remains after two months achieves the desired result and is typically permanent and will provide you with a long-term enhancement of your breast appearance.
