Fat Grafting in Newport Beach, CA

Many people often desire to enhance their curves in a subtle, natural-looking way to achieve their aesthetic goals. Fat grafting is a procedure that utilizes the patient’s own adipose tissue—a more natural alternative to silicone and fillers—to enhance contours, smooth creases, and add volume for a long-lasting, all-you result.

What Is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting, sometimes called fat transfer, is a cosmetic procedure that employs the patient’s own autologous fat to augment other areas of the body, including the face and breasts. By harvesting fat via liposuction from certain regions of the body, such as the abdomen or hips, fat grafting also provides a slimming result to the donor area. If you’re looking for a natural way to add breast volume, shape, and contour, fat grafting might be a good option for you.

What Benefits Does Fat Grafting Offer?

Fat grafting is an incredibly versatile procedure that can be applied to the face, body, and breasts alone or in combination with other procedures. Fat grafting provides many benefits, including:
  • No risk of rejection because the donor fat comes from your own body
  • Permanent alternative to fillers
  • Minimally invasive with less recovery and downtime
  • Helps balance proportions and correct minor imperfections
  • Low risk for visible scarring

Who Is a Good Candidate for Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting is suitable for virtually all patients as long as they meet the following criteria:
  1. Are in good health, both mentally and physically
  2. Are close to their goal weight, as fat grafting is not a weight loss procedure
  3. Have enough fat in their donor area, which is typically determined by the plastic surgeon during a patient’s initial consultation
  4. Are nonsmokers, or are willing to quit, as nicotine may cause fat cell death
  5. Have realistic expectations for results

Why Choose Scultura Plastic Surgery for Fat Grafting?

Dr. Jon Bradley Strawn is a fat grafting and explantation super-specialist, dedicating his career to helping women with breast reconstruction, breast implant removal, and natural breast augmentation, using fat grafting rather than implants. Dr. Strawn and our entire Scultura team are advocates for our patients, with an understanding that your emotional journey is just as important as your aesthetic one. We always place the needs of our patients first, delivering a personalized and supportive experience from your first call to your last post-op appointment and beyond.

How Is Fat Grafting Performed?

Fat grafting involves three key steps: liposuction, fat cell isolation, and fat injection. First, Dr. Strawn will make very small incisions to access your fat donor areas. While it’s important to choose a donor area that has enough fat to harvest, most patients also choose a location that can benefit from a slimming contour, such as the waist, hips, thighs, or abdomen. Through the small incisions, Dr. Strawn will use a cannula to gently remove fat via liposuction. He will simultaneously contour the donor area, which is a key step in creating a seamless, natural-looking result. Once he has removed an adequate amount of fat and the donor area looks natural and slim, he will carefully close the incisions. Next, the fat will be centrifuged, isolated, and consolidated for reinjection into the body. Finally, Dr. Strawn will meticulously inject the fat into the breasts. With an expert eye, Dr. Strawn will carefully sculpt the ideal shape and contour. Some patients also choose to use the extra fat to inject into their buttocks, face, lips, or hands.

How Is Fat Grafting Used in a Total Correction Explantation Procedure?

Fat grafting is one of the last steps in Dr. Strawn’s signature total correction explantation procedure. After removing the breast implants and capsule during the capsulectomy and following the internal muscle repair and breast lift, Dr. Strawn uses liposculpture and fat grafting to create a more beautiful—and functional—result. As the breasts sag with age, especially with the placement of large breast implants, explantation can leave the breasts misshapen and deflated. Fat grafting allows Dr. Strawn to naturally augment the breasts after the removal of breast implants to produce a more natural result. At Scultura, we want you to look and feel beautiful, so we add this extra step for total correction. Dr. Strawn uses fat grafting to give his patients a functional, comfortable, and stunning result that they can be proud of. With the slimming effect of liposuction and the natural plumpness of the breasts, Dr. Strawn’s total correction explantation patients feel whole, confident, and beautiful.

What Is Fat Grafting Recovery Like?

Fat grafting recovery is much shorter than many other body contouring procedures, as the bulk of recovery has to do with the liposuction aspect of the procedure. Following your fat grafting procedure, you will be put into a compression garment to wear to cover your donor areas. This is to keep the tissue supported, reduce swelling, and help the skin retract. Most patients can return to work within a few days following their fat grafting procedure unless they have combined it with another procedure, such as a Mommy Makeover or total correction explantation. Dr. Strawn and our team are here to help with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the entire recovery process. Please feel free to contact us at any time.

What Results Can Be Expected From Fat Grafting?

After a week or two, most bruising and a majority of swelling has resolved. Fat survival rates depend on three factors: careful processing, grafting technique, and avoiding overgrafting. At six weeks, the fat cells that survived are there to stay. The final outcome, after all of the swelling is gone, may take as long as two months. Fat transfer scars are very small and can be hidden by underwear or swimsuits and will go through the normal healing process to end up as small white scars. Once this process is over, a few months after your procedure, you will be able to see the final results. Most patients are ecstatic with their fat grafting results; they are a permanent solution to volume loss and provide stunning contours as a natural alternative to implants or fillers.
