Capsular Contracture in Newport Beach

Choosing the right surgeon and picking the right implants are the best ways to ensure attractive breast augmentation results. However, there are some complications that develop after surgery that neither you nor your surgeon can predict. Capsular contracture is one of the medical complications that can occur following your breast augmentation. While not common, with a less than 10 percent chance of occurrence, capsular contracture can be a physically and emotionally painful issue.

What Is Capsular Contracture?

Capsular contracture is most likely to occur within two years of your breast augmentation. Scar tissue naturally forms around your implant and is helpful in keeping the implant in place. In patients with capsular contracture, this scar tissue forms a tight or constricting capsule around the breast implant. Over time, the tightening may worsen and the implant can become misshapen, firm, or painful.

Stages of Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture occurs in stages. Mild cases of capsular contracture may not require correction, while severe cases can lead to intense pain and deformities.
  • Grade I: The breast is soft and looks natural
  • Grade II: The breast feels slightly firm but still looks natural
  • Grade III: The breast feels firm and looks abnormal
  • Grade IV: The breast is hard, painful, and has an abnormal appearance

Predicting Capsular Contracture

No one can predict if capsular contracture will occur following a breast augmentation. However, rates of capsular contracture are higher in patients with saline implants than those with silicone and textured implants. Capsular contracture may be caused by a low-grade infection or because of a collection of fluid under the skin. Placing implants under the muscle may also reduce your chances of developing capsular contracture.

Treating Capsular Contracture

Dr. Strawn often utilizes a set of techniques to treat capsular contracture and help prevent future issues from occurring. Dr. Strawn may use one or more of the following techniques to treat your capsular contracture:
  • Capsule work involves releasing or removing the hardened capsule from around your implants. The breast pocket may be reconstructed to properly hold your implants.
  • Implant exchange can be utilized to replace your current implants with ones that are more resistant to capsular contracture to prevent new issues from developing.
  • A size exchange may be recommended because overly large implants or patients with inadequate tissue coverage may be at an increased risk of developing capsular contracture.
  • Acellular dermal matrices may be interposed between cut edges and the capsule, which has been shown to reduce contracture.
